As I write my very first blog post as the President and Founder of Couch Clarity, I can’t help but feel a new and shiny sense of excitement for what’s to come for the communities that we serve! You know that little butterfly that you feel in your stomach when you are just about to go through the gates at Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory? (Yes, I admit to watching both versions over the holidays and the Johnny Depp version is the best one, although it was not a unanimous vote in my house. But I digress.) My little butterfly is more like a green and blue iridescent dragonfly making that loud, flapping noise right by your ear. Since I spent a lot of my life in Wisconsin over the years, this is a pleasant feeling and sound for me, just a little more weighty than a butterfly.
After 22 years as a psychotherapist, I find myself continually growing and changing along with all of my clients. I have learned more from the people that I serve than from any book I have read. What I do at Couch Clarity is not a “job” and I never feel like I’m going to “work”. It is my passion!
As I continue to grow as a person through my own experiences *in this thing called life* (Yes, you are correct, Prince just brushed by!), my desire to grow my business never stops. I’m always looking for ways to enhance not only what we do at Couch Clarity but also how we do it. Couch Clarity’s team members and our clients are always at the forefront of my mind when I’m making decisions. If Couch Clarity has a positive and fulfilled team, then they can assist and guide our clients in a more beneficial way. Our clients then feel more positive and fulfilled which then continues to spread to their family, friends, and ultimately the whole community. Just one small positive change in our lives, whether we choose to make it or we are directly affected by someone’s else’s, can create a domino affect and grow positivity all around us.
I see psychotherapy as something that everyone can benefit from. I feel that in today’s age of technology, we are yearning more for that personal connection. We are losing our abilities to communicate with other’s actually in-person. It’s easier to email or text or just observe what everyone is doing on FaceBook or Instagram and not even have to interact (…and then get upset because you then get infected with FOMO)! Why would it be negative to want to improve yourself? We see therapy more as “mental health enrichment”. We improve ourselves in so many ways like exercising, going to a salon, or following a healthy diet. Why wouldn’t we want our brains to be healthy which then directly improves our relationships with others and our confidence within ourselves? At Couch Clarity we encourage our clients to take pride in seeking mental health enrichment. Going to therapy is a badge of honor. Be proud and wear one! (Note to self: Create Couch Clarity badges for clients to wear with pride!–Just kidding…but I’d wear one! Talk about a conversation starter!)
Stay tuned for more Blog posts not only from me, Melissa Bercier, but from our amazing team at Couch Clarity!
I’ll close with a few lyrics (and my own interpretations of those lyrics) from Flashdance’s Irene Cara:
What a feeling (well, what a feeling)
Being’s believin’ (experiencing is believing)
I can have it all (I can be happy…not having to do with material things, but positive emotions and confidence)
Now I’m dancing for my life (I’m doing what I love)
Take your passion (find out what you love to do that makes you happy)
And make it happen (DO IT!!)
Pictures come alive (you can see your vision)
You can dance right through your life (you can be passionate and happy through your life if you make the choice)
What a feeling! (WHAT A FEELING!!! Therapy is COOL!)
